Address Lookup

What is an Address Lookup?

An Address Lookup is the process of searching for and selecting the correct address from a list of valid addresses using ADDRESSER's APIs. It ensures users quickly find the right address by providing real-time suggestions and structured address details.

What APIs are involved in an Address Lookup?

An Address Lookup involves two APIs:

  • Autocomplete API – Provides a list of valid address suggestions as the user types.
  • Metadata API – Retrieves the full details of the selected address.
  • How is an Address Lookup charged?

A chargeable Address Lookup occurs only when the Metadata API is called, meaning:

  • Multiple Autocomplete API calls can be made while searching for an address, but these do not incur a charge.
  • A charge applies only when an address is selected, triggering a Metadata API call to retrieve the full details.
  • Why does an Address Lookup involve multiple Autocomplete API calls?
  • The Autocomplete API refines the list of valid address suggestions as the user types.
  • Each keystroke may generate an API call to update the suggestions dynamically.
  • Users may go through several Autocomplete calls before selecting the correct address.
  • Since no address is confirmed yet, these calls are not charged.
  • When does a charge occur in the lookup process?

A charge occurs only when the Metadata API is used to fetch the structured details of a selected address. The process typically follows these steps:

  • The user types part of an address – Autocomplete API provides suggestions (no charge).
  • The user refines the search – More Autocomplete API calls refine suggestions (still no charge).
  • The user selects an address – Metadata API retrieves full address details (charge applies).
  • Why does ADDRESSER charge only for Metadata API calls?
  • Autocomplete helps users find an address but is not a final selection.
  • Metadata confirms the correct address selection, making it the billable event.
  • This ensures cost efficiency, as you are only charged for completed lookups.
  • What are the benefits of this model?
  • Cost efficiency – You pay only when an address is selected.
  • Better user experience – Dynamic address suggestions speed up the search.
  • Improved accuracy – Users select from a list of valid addresses, reducing errors.
